Community Hub Opens in Scarborough

In May 2018 Age UK Scarborough & District were awarded European Regional Development Funding by the Advantage Coast Community Led Local Development (CLLD) Programme. The CLLD funding was added to grants received from the Tudor Trust, Screwfix and North Yorkshire County Council to refurbish and expand Age UK’s property on Aberdeen Walk, Scarborough.

The refurbishment has enabled the building to become a Community Hub, offering better access and making full use of the premises which are ideally located in the town centre. Following the completion of the work the charity held a re-opening event on Saturday 25 January 2020, with BBC Look North presenter Harry Gration in attendance to cut the ribbon.

The new Community Hub will allow Age UK Scarborough & District to engage with a wider audience, offering a newly designed employment training programme to those over the age of 50.  The refurbished building will provide better support, targeting loneliness and isolation through interventions such as group exercise activities, befriending, coffee mornings and social events.

Age UK Scarborough & District have also secured Advantage Coast CLLD funding for their Over 50s Health, Wellbeing and Employment project. The project will use the newly refurbished building to work with participants aiming to build the confidence, skills and experience needed to return to work.

Chief Executive Julie Macey-Hewitt said, “We’ve already had loads of interest in using our community space. We now have an apprentice receptionist and the building is nice and warm and welcoming so we can be open five days a week.”
